Brake Backplate Blanking Plug - oval closure for the access aperture in the rear drum brake backplate.

The backplate is pierced so that the shoe adjuster can be reached and lining thickness inspected without dismantling the assembly. The plug closes that opening in normal service, keeping water, salt and road grit out of the drum chamber where they would seize the adjuster and contaminate the friction surfaces.

The plug is a push fit into the backplate. Renew it whenever it has been disturbed for adjustment or shoe replacement - a plug that has taken a set will not reseal against the pressed steel, and an open aperture accelerates corrosion of the adjuster mechanism.
