Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) unit for the V6 K-series (KV6) engine - the fixed-ratio transfer stage of the four-wheel-drive transmission, mounted directly to the gearbox in place of a conventional transfer box.

The IRD takes the gearbox output and splits it two ways. Drive to the front wheels passes through the differential carried inside the unit, which feeds the two front driveshafts and allows them to turn at different speeds when cornering. Drive to the rear passes through the hypoid gear set to the rear output pinion, and from there via the propshaft and viscous coupling unit to the rear differential.

Internally the unit comprises the main casing and right-hand housing, the primary and intermediate shafts, the laygear and hypoid gear set, the differential unit, and the rear output pinion with its housing.

The IRD and the rear differential must run matched ratios. A mismatch - most often introduced by mixed or unevenly worn tyres, or by an incorrectly specified replacement unit - places the viscous coupling under permanent load and will destroy the coupling, the IRD and ultimately the rear differential.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IRD unit and what does it do on a Freelander 1?
The IRD (Intermediate Reduction Drive) is the fixed-ratio transfer stage of the Freelander 1 four-wheel-drive system. It bolts to the gearbox in place of a transfer box and splits drive two ways, feeding the front driveshafts through its internal differential and the rear propshaft through the hypoid gear set.
Which Freelander 1 does this IRD unit fit?
This IRD unit fits the Freelander 1 with the V6 K-series (KV6) petrol engine, from VIN (V)2A000001 onwards. It is supplied new rather than as a remanufactured exchange assembly. Confirm your VIN and engine before ordering.
Why do Freelander 1 IRD units fail?
Freelander 1 IRD units typically fail when the IRD and rear differential run mismatched ratios, usually from mixed or unevenly worn tyres. The mismatch loads the viscous coupling permanently and can destroy the coupling, the IRD and eventually the rear differential. Matching tyres across all four corners matters.
Is this IRD supplied new or as an exchange unit?
This IRD is supplied as a new unit, not a remanufactured exchange assembly, so there is no core return to arrange. It is an OEM-quality part for the KV6 Freelander 1.
