Differential Oil Seal for the final drive of the Jatco five-speed automatic transmission.

It seals the differential output where the driveshaft passes into the transmission casing, holding transmission fluid in and keeping road water and grit out of the final drive. A failed seal usually shows as fluid tracking down the casing behind the driveshaft; left unattended it will drop the fluid level far enough to damage the transmission.

Renew whenever a driveshaft is withdrawn from the transmission.

Frequently asked questions

What is this differential seal for?
This is the differential oil seal for the final drive of the Freelander 1's Jatco five-speed automatic transmission. It seals the differential output where the driveshaft passes into the transmission casing, holding fluid in and keeping road water and grit out of the final drive.
What are the signs this seal has failed?
A failed differential seal usually shows as fluid tracking down the casing behind the driveshaft. Left unattended it drops the fluid level far enough to damage the transmission, so a persistent leak at the driveshaft is the signal to renew it.
When should the seal be replaced?
Renew this seal whenever a driveshaft is withdrawn from the transmission, since disturbing the joint disturbs the seal. Replacing it as a matter of course during driveshaft or CV work avoids a repeat leak shortly after reassembly.
Which vehicle does it fit?
This seal fits the Land Rover Freelander 1 (1996-2006) with the Jatco five-speed automatic transmission. It is specific to that automatic gearbox, so confirm your Freelander 1 has the Jatco auto rather than the manual before ordering.
