Collapsible pinion spacer for the differential crownwheel and pinion assembly, fitted on the pinion shaft between the two pinion head bearings.

The spacer sets the preload on the pinion taper roller bearings. As the pinion nut is tightened, the thin-walled centre section of the spacer deforms in a controlled manner until the specified pinion rotating torque is reached.

Because the collapse is permanent, a new spacer must be fitted every time the pinion nut is slackened or the pinion is removed. A reused spacer cannot hold the correct bearing preload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TXT100010 pinion spacer?
The TXT100010 is the collapsible pinion spacer used in the Freelander 1 (1997-2006) differential. It sets the pinion bearing preload between the crownwheel and pinion, crushing to size as the pinion nut is tightened.
Can the collapsible pinion spacer be reused?
No, the collapsible pinion spacer is single-use by design. It crushes to set bearing preload during assembly, so a used spacer can't give the correct preload again. Fit a new TXT100010 whenever the Freelander 1 pinion is disturbed.
Where is the pinion spacer used and is it a DIY job?
The pinion spacer sits behind the pinion head bearing inside the Freelander 1 differential. Setting pinion preload correctly needs specialist tools and experience, so it's typically a workshop job when rebuilding the diff.
