EGR Valve for the exhaust gas recirculation circuit on the 2.0L L Series diesel engine.

The valve meters a controlled quantity of exhaust gas from the exhaust side back into the inlet tract, lowering peak combustion temperature and reducing the oxides of nitrogen formed during combustion. It is held closed at idle and under full load, and opened under engine management control at part throttle.

Carbon build-up on the valve seat is the usual failure mode, leaving the valve partly open. Symptoms include rough running at light throttle, black smoke and an emissions test failure.
