Belt-driven from the crankshaft accessory drive, the alternator supplies the vehicle's running electrical load and maintains battery state of charge. The vacuum pump mounted on the rear of the alternator body is driven from the same rotor shaft and generates the vacuum used by the brake servo and the vacuum-operated engine controls, since a diesel engine produces no usable manifold vacuum of its own.

Confirm that the unit being replaced carries the vacuum pump and the same output rating before fitting.
