Fuel Filter Element for diesel applications - the replaceable filtration cartridge that fits inside the fuel filter housing in the low-pressure fuel supply circuit.
Positioned between the lift pump and the injection pump, the element traps particulate contamination and separates water carried in the fuel before it can reach the injection equipment. This matters more on a diesel than a petrol system: the injection pump and injector nozzles rely on the fuel itself for lubrication and are machined to very fine clearances, so abrasive debris or free water causes rapid and expensive wear.
The element is a scheduled service item and should also be renewed whenever fuel delivery becomes restricted - symptoms include power loss under load, uneven running at higher engine speeds, and hard starting.

Fit new sealing rings on reassembly, and bleed the fuel system after fitting so that no air remains in the supply line.
