Layshaft Gear - a gear from the layshaft, or countershaft, cluster of the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox.

The layshaft runs beneath the mainshaft and is turned in constant mesh by the input shaft. The gears cut along it engage their counterparts on the mainshaft to establish the individual forward ratios, so the condition of this gear bears directly on drive transfer and gear noise through the box.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016
Fitment Notes DEFENDER 1987-2006 — LT77 5-speed manual transmission. To Suffix E inclusive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LT77 layshaft gear?
The LT77 layshaft gear is one of the gears on the layshaft, or countershaft, cluster of the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox. The layshaft runs beneath the mainshaft in constant mesh with the input shaft, so this gear helps form the forward ratios and affects drive transfer and gear noise.
Which gearbox does this layshaft gear fit?
This layshaft gear fits the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox used on the Defender, up to gearbox Suffix E inclusive. Later suffixes can differ internally, so confirm your gearbox suffix before ordering. The suffix is typically stamped on the gearbox casing.
When does a layshaft gear need replacing?
A layshaft gear typically needs replacing when its teeth are chipped, pitted, or worn, which usually shows as whining, grinding, or trouble holding a gear. Because the layshaft is in constant mesh, damage here affects several ratios. It's usually renewed during a full gearbox rebuild rather than on its own.
