Reverse Idler Gear for the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox.

The reverse idler sits between the layshaft reverse gear and the mainshaft reverse gear. When reverse is selected it is brought into mesh to bridge the two, reversing the direction of mainshaft rotation so drive is transmitted in reverse. Its bush and shaft must be in good condition for clean reverse engagement without noise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Reverse Idler Gear and what does it do?
The Reverse Idler Gear sits between the layshaft reverse gear and the mainshaft reverse gear in the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox. When reverse is selected it's brought into mesh to bridge the two, reversing the direction of mainshaft rotation so drive is transmitted in reverse.
Which vehicles does this reverse idler gear fit?
This fits the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox, typically used on the Land Rover Defender, Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 (to approximately 1994). Confirm your gearbox is the LT77 unit before ordering, as fitment depends on the specific gearbox rather than just the model.
What causes reverse to become noisy or difficult on the LT77?
Reverse trouble on the LT77 often comes from a worn reverse idler gear, its bush, or its shaft. Because reverse has no synchromesh, a worn idler can cause noise or crunching when selecting reverse. The bush and shaft must be in good condition for clean engagement. Inspect these together during a rebuild.
