Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC1406 differential shaft used for?
The FTC1406 is the constant pinion for the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox, carrying drive from the input into the constant-mesh gear cluster. It's fitted to four-cylinder LT77 Defenders and is a Genuine Land Rover part.
Does this pinion shaft fit all LT77 Defenders?
This pinion shaft fits four-cylinder LT77 five-speed Defenders. It isn't used on the later TDi gearboxes, so confirm your gearbox is an LT77 before ordering.
Why would the LT77 pinion shaft need replacing?
The constant pinion typically wears or chips its gear teeth and bearing journals after high mileage or oil starvation, causing whine or jumping out of mesh. Replacing it usually means stripping the LT77 gearbox, so it's a specialist job.
