Detent Spring for the LT77 and R380 manual gearbox gear change mechanism.

This spring forms part of the selector detent assembly within the gearbox casing. It applies load to a detent ball that locates against the selector fork rail, holding each gear rail firmly in the selected position and preventing unintended gear disengagement under load. The same spring is common to both the LT77 5-speed and R380 gearboxes. Sold as a single spring.

Frequently asked questions

What does the gearbox detent spring do?
The detent spring is part of the selector detent assembly inside the gearbox. It loads a detent ball against the selector rail, holding each gear firmly in the selected position and preventing it jumping out under load. Common to the LT77 five-speed and R380 gearboxes.
Which gearboxes and models use this detent spring?
This detent spring fits the LT77 five-speed and R380 manual gearboxes, used on the Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994). It's sold as a single spring, so check how many your selector assembly needs.
What are the signs of a weak detent spring?
A weak or broken detent spring typically lets the gearbox jump out of gear under load, or makes gear selection feel vague. Because the spring holds the selector rail in position, a failed one stops the gear staying engaged. It's commonly renewed during a gearbox rebuild.
