It seals the joint between the valve body and the transmission case, keeping the individual hydraulic control circuits separated from one another and from the sump. Once the gasket hardens or splits, fluid cross-leaks between circuits and line pressure falls away, which typically shows as delayed engagement, slipping, or flared shifts.
