Layshaft for the R380 five-speed manual gearbox, part of the main gear train assembly.

Also referred to as the lay cluster or countershaft, the layshaft is driven continuously by the input shaft constant-mesh gear and carries the integral gear cluster that drives the free gears on the mainshaft. It runs on taper roller bearings at each end within the gearbox casing, and its gear cluster establishes the ratio of each forward gear selected on the mainshaft.

This layshaft corresponds to the suffix K, L and M R380 build and covers both diesel and V8 petrol applications. It is normally renewed as part of a full gearbox rebuild, together with the bearings, synchroniser rings and shims.
