Layshaft Bearing - taper roller bearing supporting the layshaft in the R380 5-speed manual gearbox.
The bearing carries the countershaft (layshaft) within the main gearbox casing, holding it in correct radial and axial alignment so the layshaft gear cluster runs true against the mainshaft gears. Taper roller construction takes the combined radial and thrust loading produced by the helical gear cut, and the bearing is set to its working preload by shimming on assembly.
Worn layshaft bearings typically present as gearbox whine that changes with the gear selected, rough or noisy engagement, and metallic particles in the gearbox oil. Bearings are renewed as a matched pair with the gearbox stripped.
