Neutral Sensing Switch - commonly referred to as the XYZ switch - on the ZF 5-speed automatic transmission, in the gear position sensing and starter inhibit circuit.
Mounted on the transmission at the selector shaft, the switch reads the position of the shaft and reports the selected range to the transmission control module. That signal drives the selected-gear display, permits starter operation only in Park or Neutral, and enables the reversing lamps in reverse.
Typical failure symptoms are an incorrect or blank gear display, a no-crank condition with the lever in Park or Neutral, reversing lamps that do not operate, and gear position faults logged against the transmission control module. Applies to the M62 4.4 V8 petrol with the 5-speed Steptronic automatic.
