Gearbox Bearing - layshaft taper roller bearing for the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox.

The layshaft turns whenever the clutch is engaged, carrying drive from the input shaft to the mainshaft gear cluster. This taper roller bearing takes both radial and axial load at the layshaft journal and, working against its opposing bearing at the other end of the shaft, sets the layshaft end float - adjusted with shims on assembly. A worn or pitted bearing produces a gearbox whine that rises with road speed rather than engine speed, and lets the layshaft move under load, which can allow the box to jump out of gear.

Supplied as a single bearing. Renewal requires the gearbox to be removed and split, and the end float reset.

Frequently asked questions

What is the layshaft taper roller bearing and what does it do?
The layshaft taper roller bearing supports the layshaft in the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox, carrying drive from the input shaft to the mainshaft gear cluster. It takes both radial and axial load at the layshaft journal and, working against its opposing bearing, helps set the layshaft end float.
Which gearbox and vehicles does this bearing fit?
This bearing fits the LT77 five-speed manual gearbox, used on the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006), Range Rover Classic (1986-1991, up to VIN HA610293) and the Jaguar XJ6 Series 3, which shares the LT77. Confirm your gearbox is the LT77 before ordering.
What are the symptoms of a worn layshaft bearing?
A worn or pitted layshaft bearing typically produces a gearbox whine that rises with road speed rather than engine speed. It also lets the layshaft move under load, which can allow the gearbox to jump out of gear. Both point to bearing renewal.
Can this bearing be replaced without removing the gearbox?
No. Replacing the layshaft bearing requires the gearbox to be removed from the vehicle and split, then the layshaft end float reset with shims on reassembly. It's a specialist workshop job, not an in-car repair.
