Handbrake Operating Lever from the parking brake control assembly. The lever is the driver-operated arm that applies the transmission brake through the parking brake cable.

Pulling the lever draws the inner cable, which rotates the operating arm at the transmission brake backplate and expands the shoes against the drum mounted on the transfer box output. A ratchet and pawl inside the lever hold the applied position until the release button is pressed.

Left-hand drive applications. A worn ratchet or an elongated pivot lets the lever creep down under load, and is a common cause of a parking brake that will not hold on a gradient even after the shoes and cable have been adjusted correctly.
