Transmission Brake Backplate - the mounting plate for the drum-type transmission parking brake on the rear output of the LT230 transfer box.

The backplate bolts to the rear face of the transfer box housing and carries the brake shoes, the expander unit and the adjuster; the brake drum runs over the assembly and is mounted on the rear output flange. Because the parking brake acts on the transmission rather than on the road wheels, all of its load is carried by this plate and the transfer box housing.

This is the direct entry cable type, in which the handbrake cable enters the expander through the backplate.

A distorted or elongated backplate will prevent the shoes from centring in the drum and is a common cause of a parking brake that will not hold on a gradient after adjustment.
