Three different parking brake designs have been used across Land Rover and Range Rover production, and this collection is built around all three. On Series I, Series II and III, classic Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38, the handbrake lever pulls a cable that operates a separate small drum brake mounted at the rear output of the transfer box, not at the rear wheels. This is a transmission-mounted handbrake: worn transmission handbrake shoes, sometimes called parking brake shoes, are a parking brake fault, not a rear wheel brake fault, even though the shoes themselves look similar to a conventional drum brake set. Because of that overlap, transmission handbrake shoes are listed both here and in Land Rover Brake Shoes & Drums. That is deliberate: a buyer diagnosing a parking brake fault searches under Handbrake Parts, while a buyer working through a full drum brake service searches under Brake Shoes & Drums. Both paths lead to the same part.
Range Rover L322 and the pre-facelift, mechanical-lever version of Freelander 2 (2006 to 2012) use a different layout: a small drum machined into the inside of the rear brake disc, known as a drum-in-hat parking brake, with shoes that expand against it when the handbrake cable is pulled. Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 use the same drum-in-hat principle, but the cable is pulled by an electric actuator rather than a hand lever. This collection covers the actuators, shoes and cables for that system. It does not cover the caliper-integrated EPB fitted to later platforms, including the facelift Freelander 2 (2013 to 2014), Range Rover L405, L494, L461 and L460, and the current Defender L663, none of which have a drum, shoes or a central actuator to service.
Buying GuideHandbrake parts in this collection span from small fixings under a euro to a complete EPB actuator module, and quality tier matters more here than on most collections because several parts sit inside a safety-critical system. Genuine Land Rover parts give the lowest-risk fitment route where shoe-to-drum clearance, actuator specification or chassis-code accuracy matters. Recognised OE/OEM-quality brands such as Ferodo, TRW and Delphi may offer the same design intent at a lower price, depending on the exact part number and application. Aftermarket parts suit gaskets, springs, gaiters and hardware well, but for handbrake shoes and EPB actuator components, matching the exact model, chassis code and, where relevant, part revision matters more than brand tier alone.
On Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320, do not remove the rear brake discs, handbrake shoes or EPB cables without first placing the EPB into service mode with a compatible diagnostic tool. The actuator, mounted in the rear subframe rather than on the caliper, must be driven to its slack position before the cables can be safely unhooked from the shoe spreaders. When an EPB actuator has been running against worn shoes, a seized adjuster or a stretched cable, the actuator on its own is rarely the true root cause. Replacing the motor alone without also checking and renewing the shoes and cable behind it can reproduce the same fault.

Confirming the correct handbrake part starts with the model, chassis code and, for Defender, the body length. Handbrake cable length differs between Defender 90, 110 and 130 because the wheelbase changes the distance between the lever and the rear axle, and a cable is listed separately for each body length. For vehicles built from 1996 onwards, the 17-digit ISO 3779 VIN confirms model year and market specification and is the most reliable fitment reference. For Series and pre-1997 Defender and Discovery 1, chassis plate data is more reliable than the VIN, since early Land Rover VIN encoding does not follow the later ISO standard.
LHD and RHD variants matter most for the handbrake cable itself, since the cable routes past the transmission tunnel and pedal box differently depending on market. Confirm LHD or RHD alongside model and body length before ordering a cable. Attempting to disturb the actuator or caliper without this step risks damaging the actuator gearset.
Yes, on both transmission-mounted and drum-in-hat handbrakes. A worn return spring or seized adjuster forces new shoes to wear unevenly or drag against the drum, shortening their service life to a fraction of what a full renewal would achieve. Replacing all three components together is the standard workshop approach.
The EPB control module tracks the actuator motor's position and expects it to match the new component state. Fitting shoes or cables without running a diagnostic re-initialisation cycle afterwards leaves the module with outdated position data, which triggers a warning light or fault code even when the mechanical repair itself is correct.
The aperture shape follows the lever design for your model and production year. Earlier Series levers use a round aperture, while late Series IIA and Series III levers are L-shaped and require an oval aperture gaiter. Check the shape of your existing gaiter or lever base before ordering, as fitting the wrong shape leaves a gap at the base of the lever.
