The module contains the folded air bag together with its gas generator, and is fired by the restraints control module when the crash sensors register an impact of sufficient severity.

Air bag modules are pyrotechnic devices. Disconnect the battery and allow the system to discharge before working on any restraint component, and handle, store and install the module in line with the manufacturer's safety procedures.
