Front ABS wheel speed sensor, part of the anti-lock braking system's wheel speed sensing circuit.

The sensor mounts at the front wheel station and reads the toothed exciter ring rotating with the hub, supplying the wheel speed signal the ABS control module uses to detect impending wheel lock and modulate brake pressure at that wheel.

The sensor is not handed: the same part serves both the left-hand and right-hand front positions, and one is fitted at each front wheel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SSW500090 front ABS wheel speed sensor for?
The SSW500090 is a front ABS wheel speed sensor for the Land Rover Defender Puma, built 2007 to 2016. It reads front wheel speed and feeds the anti-lock brake system.
Where does the front ABS sensor fit?
The front ABS sensor mounts at the front hub on the Puma Defender, reading a reluctor ring as the wheel turns. There's typically one per front wheel, so order two if you're doing both sides.
How do I confirm this fits my Defender?
The SSW500090 fits the Puma Defender from VIN AA798476 / 7A000001 (2007 to 2016). Earlier Defenders use a different ABS setup, so check your VIN falls in range before ordering.
What are the signs of a failing ABS sensor?
A failing front ABS sensor on the Puma Defender usually lights the ABS warning and can switch off the anti-lock system, often logging a wheel-specific fault code. Replacing the sensor normally restores braking assistance.
