Transfer Box Gear Set - High Ratio is a gear set for the two-speed transfer box that raises the high-range gearing.

By raising the high-range ratio, the set reduces engine speed for a given road speed, lowering engine rpm and noise during on-road cruising, while low range is retained for off-road and towing use. It replaces the standard high-ratio gears within the transfer case.

High Ratio increases 31.8%. Low ratio stays the same.
Requires accurate machining of the transfer case!

Frequently asked questions

What does the HRGS high ratio gear set do?
The HRGS high ratio gear set raises the high-range gearing in the Series Land Rover two-speed transfer box. It lowers engine rpm for a given road speed, cutting engine noise and strain during on-road cruising, while low range is kept for off-road and towing. It replaces the standard high-ratio gears inside the transfer case.
Which Land Rovers does the HRGS gear set fit?
The HRGS gear set fits the Land Rover Series I, Series II and Series III with the standard two-speed transfer box. It's made by Ashcroft Transmissions. Confirm your transfer box type before ordering, as the gears must match the existing casing.
Why fit a high ratio gear set to a Series Land Rover?
A high ratio gear set makes a Series Land Rover more relaxed on the road. By raising the high-range ratio, engine rpm drops at cruising speed, which typically reduces noise, vibration and fuel use on longer runs. Low range stays unchanged for off-road work and towing.
Is fitting the HRGS gear set a DIY job?
Fitting the HRGS gear set is typically a specialist job. It means dismantling the transfer box to swap the internal high-ratio gears, which calls for workshop tools and experience with gear setup. Most owners have this done by a transmission specialist rather than attempting it at home.
