U-Bolt - Rear Spring Mounting - clamping bolt securing the rear leaf spring to the axle within the rear suspension assembly.

The U-bolt passes around the axle casing and clamps the spring pack, the spring seat and the lower shock absorber mounting plate together into a single stack. That clamp load is what holds the spring pack located on its centre bolt, so U-bolts are renewed rather than reused once they have been stretched or corroded.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Series 2 and 3
Fitment Notes SERIES III — Rear suspension. U-bolt for rear spring / shock absorber mounting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MUB171 U-bolt used for?
The MUB171 U-bolt clamps the rear leaf spring to the axle on the Land Rover Series III. It's a rear spring mounting U-bolt, serving the rear spring and shock absorber mounting area, holding the spring pack securely against the axle.
How many U-bolts are needed for a rear spring job?
U-bolts are typically fitted in pairs per spring, so a Series III rear axle usually needs four to cover both sides. They're normally replaced as a set whenever the rear springs are removed, since the threads and clamping load degrade over time.
Should the U-bolts be replaced when refitting rear springs?
Yes, rear spring U-bolts are best replaced rather than reused on the Series III. They're a clamping fastener that stretches under torque, and reusing stretched U-bolts can let the spring shift on the axle. Fresh U-bolts help keep the rear axle located correctly.
