Frequently asked questions

What is the LR078913LR lower timing belt used for?
LR078913LR is the lower timing belt for the 3.0L V6 diesel engine, driving the lower timing gear assembly at the front of the block. It's listed for the Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494 and Range Rover Velar with that engine.
Which engine does this fit?
It fits the 3.0L V6 diesel only. Petrol and 2.0L Ingenium engined versions of the Discovery 5, Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494 use a different timing arrangement, so confirm the engine in your vehicle rather than going by model.
Why does the lower timing belt matter on the 3.0 V6 diesel?
The lower timing belt drives the lower gear train on the 3.0L V6 diesel. If it strips or snaps, oil delivery stops and the engine typically suffers major internal damage very quickly. That's why it's a scheduled replacement rather than a run-to-failure part.
Where is the lower timing belt on the engine?
It's at the front face of the engine block, low down behind the crankshaft pulley and the front cover. On the Discovery 5 and Range Rover L405 the front of the engine has to come apart to reach it, so it's a workshop job rather than a driveway one.
What else usually gets replaced at the same time?
The lower timing gear tensioner and idler pulleys are typically renewed alongside the belt, since they sit behind the same covers and have run the same hours. Reusing worn tensioning components on the 3.0L V6 diesel risks the new belt failing early.
