The unit combines an oxidation catalyst and a wall-flow particulate filter in a single housing, mounted in the front section of the exhaust downstream of the turbocharger. Exhaust gas is forced through the porous filter walls, trapping soot, which is stored until the engine management raises exhaust temperature and runs a regeneration cycle to burn it off. Differential pressure and temperature sensing across the unit is what the ECU uses to model filter loading and trigger regeneration.
Replacement is normally required once non-combustible ash has accumulated beyond the level regeneration can clear, or where the substrate has cracked or partially melted following repeated failed or interrupted regenerations. Persistent regeneration faults should be diagnosed before fitting a new filter, since an underlying injection, EGR or sensor fault will contaminate the replacement in the same way.
Renew the associated gaskets and clamps on assembly, and carry out the particulate filter replacement routine with a diagnostic tool so the ECU soot-loading model is reset.
