Air Filter - engine air cleaner element, seated in the intake air cleaner housing upstream of the mass air flow sensor and the turbocharger inlet.
A pleated paper panel element that removes airborne dust and grit from the intake charge before it reaches the turbocharger and the combustion chambers, protecting the compressor wheel, cylinder bores and piston rings from abrasive wear. Keeping the element clean also protects the mass air flow sensor, whose signal the engine management system uses to meter fuelling.
Serviced by replacement rather than cleaning. A restricted element shows up as dulled throttle response and raised fuel consumption. Covers 2.0L petrol and 2.2L diesel applications.
