Brake Pad Wear Sensor - front brake pad wear warning wire, part of the front disc brake friction-monitoring circuit.

The sensor wire clips into the front brake pad and connects to the brake harness. As the friction material wears down to its service limit the conductor loop inside the sensor is abraded through, breaking the circuit and raising the brake pad wear warning at the instrument pack.

The loop cannot be restored once it has worn through, so the wear sensor is renewed whenever the front pads are replaced.

Frequently asked questions

What is the front brake pad wear sensor and what does it do?
The front brake pad wear sensor is the warning wire that clips into a front brake pad on the Discovery 3 and Discovery 4. As the pad wears to its limit, the loop inside the sensor is abraded through, breaking the circuit and raising the brake pad wear warning on the dash.
Can the wear sensor be reused, or does it need replacing?
The wear sensor is single-use. Once the loop has worn through it cannot be restored, so it is renewed every time the front pads are replaced. Fitting a new sensor with new pads is the only reliable way to reset the warning.
How many front wear sensors do I need?
Front wear sensors are typically fitted as a single sensor on one front pad, so usually one is needed per pad change rather than one per wheel. Check your existing setup, as some cars carry a sensor on each side.
How do I confirm this sensor fits my vehicle?
This front wear sensor fits the Discovery 3 (2005-2009) and Discovery 4 (2010-2016) across all engine and suspension variants. Confirm your VIN against the fitment note if you are unsure which brake setup your vehicle has.
