Water Pump - engine coolant pump assembly for the 2.5L 6-cylinder BMW M51 diesel engine.
The pump is belt-driven from the front of the engine and circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, heater circuit and radiator, sustaining flow across the whole engine speed range. The impeller runs on a shaft carried in a sealed bearing, with a mechanical face seal behind the impeller separating the coolant from the bearing.
Bearing rumble, perceptible shaft play, or coolant weeping from the drain hole in the pump body indicate a failed seal or bearing and call for replacement. Renew the pump gasket or sealing ring on fitting, then refill and bleed the cooling system.
