Power Steering Pump for the hydraulic power-assisted steering circuit on V8 petrol engines.

Driven from the engine by the auxiliary belt, the pump draws fluid from the reservoir and delivers pressurised flow to the steering rack, providing hydraulic assistance in proportion to driver input at the wheel. An integral flow-control and pressure-relief valve caps maximum system pressure and returns surplus flow to the reservoir.

A failing pump shows itself as heavy steering at parking speeds, a whine that rises and falls with engine speed, and aerated or foaming fluid in the reservoir. On installation the system should be filled with the correct fluid and bled properly - running the pump dry damages it in seconds - and the drive belt condition and pulley alignment checked.
