Frequently asked questions

What does the steering damper do on a Land Rover?
The steering damper mounts across the steering linkage and damps oscillation and wheel vibration fed back through the steering. It steadies the steering over rough surfaces and rutted tracks without affecting how the wheel returns to centre. On these models it's part of the front steering and suspension setup.
Which Land Rovers does this steering damper fit?
This damper fits the Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (up to 1994). It mounts to the original steering damper points and reuses the factory fasteners. Fitment data on this part is limited, so check your existing damper mounting before ordering if you're unsure.
What are the signs a steering damper needs replacing?
Typically a worn steering damper shows up as fluid leaking from the body, increased steering shimmy, or a wandering, vibrating feel through the wheel on uneven roads. On the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic a tired damper usually lets more road vibration reach the wheel.
How many steering dampers are needed and is fitting straightforward?
Typically one steering damper is fitted per vehicle. It bolts to the original mounting points and reuses the factory fasteners, so usually only basic hand tools are needed. It's generally a DIY-friendly job, though access on the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic can be tight.
