How many gaiters are needed?
One gaiter sits at each end of the steering rack, so two are typically needed to do the vehicle. They are usually renewed as a pair, because both ends see the same age and the extra labour to reach the second one is small once the first is done.
Why do steering rack gaiters fail?
Rack gaiters fail from perished rubber and damage from road debris. A split gaiter lets water and grit into the rack, which wears the rack teeth and the inner tie rod ball joint. The usual sign is a torn or oil soaked boot spotted during a service inspection.
What is involved in fitting a rack gaiter?
Changing a rack gaiter means removing the track rod end and, on most applications, releasing the inner tie rod. Front wheel alignment has to be reset afterwards. Count and mark the track rod end position before removal so the setting can be returned close to original.
