Frequently asked questions

What is the LR129168LR steering connecting rod?
The LR129168LR is the inner steering connecting rod running from the steering gear to the outer tie rod end. It transfers the steering gear travel to the outer ball joint and steering knuckle, and sets the toe angle through its adjustable threaded end. Fitted to the Defender L663, Discovery 5, Range Rover L460 and Range Rover Sport L461.
Where does the steering connecting rod sit?
The steering connecting rod sits in the front steering linkage between the steering gear and the outer tie rod end. It is the adjustable inner rod that sets front wheel toe, so it is central to steering feel and tyre wear on the Defender L663 and Range Rover L460.
What are the signs this steering rod needs replacing?
A worn steering connecting rod typically gives loose or vague steering, knocking on turns, and uneven front tyre wear. Play develops at its ball joint or threaded end over time. Because it is a steering component, replacement is usually followed by a four-wheel alignment.
Does fitting this rod need wheel alignment?
Yes, replacing the steering connecting rod resets the toe, so the front wheel alignment must be checked and adjusted afterward. It is a Genuine Land Rover part, and on the Discovery 5 and Range Rover Sport L461 the tracking should be set to the workshop specification.
