Front Shock Absorber, right-hand side, part of the front suspension damping assembly.
The damper controls the rate at which the front suspension compresses and rebounds. Suspension movement is forced through a valved hydraulic circuit inside the unit and dissipated as heat, so that wheel and body motion settles quickly after each road input. Working alongside the front spring medium and the anti-roll bar, it is the damper that determines ride control, tyre contact and steering stability.
Dampers wear progressively rather than failing outright. Fluid seepage down the body, a knock over uneven surfaces, or continued body float after a bump all indicate the unit has passed its useful service life.
Fit as an axle pair wherever possible so that left and right damping characteristics remain matched.
