It locates the wheel under load, transmitting cornering and braking forces between the hub carrier and its body mounting while allowing the suspension to travel through its full range. Wear in the arm's bushes lets the rear geometry shift under load, typically showing as uneven rear tyre wear or a knock from the rear of the vehicle.
