The air spring carries the rear axle load in place of a conventional coil spring. It is inflated and deflated by the air supply unit under control of the suspension module and the ride height sensors, maintaining the selected ride height under varying load and allowing the vehicle to change between its height settings.

A perished or leaking spring typically shows as ride height loss on one corner after the vehicle has stood, extended or repeated compressor running, or a suspension fault warning. Renewing both rear springs together is advisable, as the opposite side will have seen comparable age and duty. The left-hand equivalent is LR188834.
