The damper is mounted between the lower wishbone and the body structure and controls oscillation of the road spring, maintaining tyre contact and limiting squat under acceleration and body roll in cornering.

Symptoms of a worn unit include rear-end float over undulations, poor rebound control and uneven rear tyre wear. Dampers should be replaced as an axle pair so that damping stays balanced side to side.
