Frequently asked questions

Where does the RPM500200W boot fit on the vehicle?
It fits over the rear shock absorber, covering the exposed damper rod between the damper body and its upper mount. On air sprung Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 models it sits behind the rear wheel, in the direct path of road spray.
What is the rear damper boot for?
It stops grit, salt and water reaching the damper rod. The rod slides through a seal thousands of times per journey, and any debris on it acts like sandpaper. A missing boot is one of the most common reasons a replacement damper leaks early.
How many are needed for the rear axle?
Two, one per side. The service kit is quoted at two per vehicle, and since both rear dampers see the same conditions, replacing them individually rarely makes sense.
Does my Discovery or Range Rover Sport need air suspension for this to fit?
Yes. This boot is listed only for vehicles with air spring suspension. On the Discovery 3 it applies from VIN 6A392100 to 9A999999, on the Discovery 4 from VIN AA000001, and on the Range Rover Sport L320 from VIN 6A957897 to 9A999999 and from VIN AA000001.
When should this be changed?
Change it whenever the rear dampers come off, and immediately if the existing boot is split or gone. Fitting a new damper without a sound boot typically shortens its life considerably, which turns a cheap part into an expensive repeat job.
