Front Drive Shaft Assembly - front axle drive, 1.8 K16 four-cylinder petrol.

Carries drive from the front differential output to the wheel hub. A plunging joint at the differential end lets the shaft change effective length as the suspension moves, while a fixed constant velocity joint at the hub end keeps drive smooth through full steering lock. Two shafts are fitted per vehicle, one each side.

Worn joints usually announce themselves as a rhythmic click or knock on full lock under power. A split gaiter that has thrown its grease is the normal cause.

Frequently asked questions

What is this front drive shaft assembly?
This front drive shaft assembly carries drive from the front differential output to the wheel hub. A plunging joint at the diff end lets the shaft change length as the suspension moves, while a fixed constant velocity joint at the hub end keeps drive smooth through full steering lock.
How many drive shafts are needed for this vehicle?
Two drive shafts are fitted per vehicle, one on each side. This is a single shaft, so order two if you are replacing both sides. Many owners replace the worn side first, but a high-mileage car often needs both in time.
What are the signs a front drive shaft is worn?
A worn front drive shaft usually announces itself as a rhythmic click or knock on full lock under power. A split gaiter that has thrown its grease is the normal cause, since it lets the CV joint run dry and wear.
Which vehicle does this drive shaft fit?
This front drive shaft fits the Freelander 1 L314 (1996 to 2006) with the 1.8 K16 four-cylinder petrol, from VIN 2A000001 onwards. It is an aftermarket Allmakes shaft. Confirm your engine and VIN, as fitment starts at that VIN break.
