LR123811G - Tensioner – Timing Chain
The tensioner bears against the tensioner blade on the slack run of the primary chain, taking up chain stretch and wear so that correct crankshaft-to-camshaft timing is held and chain slap is controlled throughout the rev range.
A worn or collapsed primary tensioner typically announces itself as a rattle from the front of the engine on cold start, before oil pressure builds. Because the chain, guides and tensioner wear as a set, the tensioner is normally renewed as part of a full timing chain overhaul rather than in isolation.
