Supercharger Isolator - the torsional damping coupler inside the supercharger drive, sitting between the drive input and the rotor pack of the Roots-type supercharger used on supercharged petrol engines.

The isolator transmits drive torque to the rotors while absorbing the torsional pulses generated as the rotors load and unload against boost pressure. It is a wear item: as the damping element hardens and loses tension, lash develops in the drive and the supercharger produces a distinct rattle or chatter at idle and on a closed throttle. Left in service, the shock loading that the isolator was fitted to absorb is instead carried by the supercharger's own bearings and gear set.

Size: 49.38mm isolator diameter. More than one isolator size is used across the supercharged petrol range, so measure the part being replaced before ordering.

The isolator is replaced with the supercharger removed from the engine and the drive pulley and nose section separated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the supercharger isolator and what does it do?
The supercharger isolator is the torsional damping coupler inside the Roots-type supercharger drive. It transmits drive torque to the rotor pack while absorbing the pulses created as the rotors load against boost. It's fitted to supercharged petrol engines only, and when it hardens the drive develops a rattle or chatter at idle.
Which engines and models does the 49.38mm isolator fit?
The 49.38mm supercharger isolator fits supercharged petrol engines only, including the Discovery 4, Discovery 5, New Defender 2020+ 5.0 V8, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494 and Range Rover Velar. More than one isolator size is used across the range, so measure the part being replaced before ordering.
Why does the supercharger isolator fail?
The supercharger isolator fails as its damping element hardens and loses tension, letting lash develop in the drive. You'll typically hear a rattle or chatter at idle and on a closed throttle. Left in service, the shock loading it was fitted to absorb is carried instead by the supercharger's own bearings and gears.
How is the isolator replaced?
The isolator is replaced with the supercharger removed from the engine and the drive pulley and nose section separated, so it's a specialist job rather than a quick fix. Confirm the 49.38mm size against the part you remove, since the supercharged petrol range uses more than one isolator diameter.
