Transfer Case Fluid - the synthetic lubricant specified for the electronically controlled transfer case in the four-wheel-drive driveline.

The fluid lubricates the chain drive and bearings and sets the friction characteristic of the wet multi-plate clutch pack that meters torque between the front and rear outputs. Because that clutch is hydraulically actuated and its torque delivery is calibrated around this specific friction behaviour, substituting a general-purpose gear oil or an automatic transmission fluid causes driveline shudder, inconsistent torque transfer and accelerated clutch pack wear. The same specification is used in Haldex-type couplings.

Transfer case fluid degrades on a time and duty-cycle basis rather than by mileage alone. Renew the drain and fill plug sealing washers when the fluid is changed.
