Transmits torque from the rear differential output to the rear wheel hub. Constant-velocity joints at the inboard and outboard ends allow the shaft to deliver a steady output speed throughout suspension travel, without the speed fluctuation a plain universal joint would introduce.

Typically replaced when a joint develops play, knocks under load or when pulling away, or when a split joint boot has allowed grease loss and dirt ingress into the joint.
