It accepts coolant displaced as the system heats and returns it as the system cools, keeping the circuit full and free of trapped air across the full temperature range. The tank also carries the system fill point and the seat for the pressure cap that sets the circuit's operating pressure.

The moulded tank is a service item: sustained heat cycling under pressure eventually produces hairline cracking and seam seepage, most often noticed as a coolant level that falls slowly with no obvious external leak elsewhere in the system.
