Frequently asked questions

What is the STC3941GIRLING rear shock absorber used for?

It's the early-style rear shock absorber for the Range Rover Classic and early Discovery 1, damping the rear axle. This is a Girling unit under part number STC3941, using the early two-half bush upper eye rather than a later bolt-in mount.

Which models fit the STC3941GIRLING?

It's confirmed for the Range Rover Classic up to VIN HA610293, very early Discovery 1 (1990), and 109-inch Series IIA models only. Later Discovery 1 and post-1970 Range Rover Classic variants take a different shock absorber, so check your VIN before ordering.

Is one STC3941GIRLING enough, or should I replace both rear shocks?

It's sold individually, but rear shock absorbers should typically be replaced in pairs. Fitting just one can leave the rear axle damping unevenly, which affects ride quality and tyre wear over time.

What causes a Girling rear shock absorber to fail?

Wear typically comes from seal degradation and age rather than sudden failure. Watch for oil weeping from the shock body, a bouncy or wallowing ride, or knocking over bumps as signs it needs replacing.

How is the STC3941GIRLING different from the STC3941 and STC3941B?

All three share the same fitment and base part number STC3941, differing only by manufacturer. This one is Girling, STC3941 is PR2 Pro, and STC3941B is Boge. Fitment and function are the same across all three.
