View full detailsThe Range Rover Classic is the first-generation Range Rover, produced at Solihull from 1970 to 1996, with over 317,000 vehicles built across a 26-year run. It was succeeded by the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001); later flagships up to the current L460 are listed on the Range Rover parts hub.
The "Classic" name was applied officially from 1994, when the second-generation P38 launched alongside the original model, to distinguish the two in the market. If your vehicle was built between 1994 and 1996, it is a Range Rover Classic, not a P38. This collection covers body, chassis, cooling, engine, drivetrain, suspension, electrical, and trim components for both petrol and diesel variants across the full Classic range — including parts suitable for routine maintenance, mechanical refresh, and full restoration projects.
The 26-year run divides into three distinct mechanical sub-eras. Most fitment decisions follow this split rather than calendar year alone.
| Sub-era | Years | Petrol Engines | Diesel Engines | Gearboxes | Wheelbase |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early (carburettor era) | 1970 to 1985 | 3.5 Rover V8 (carburettor) | None until 1986 | LT95 4-spd combined, then LT77 5-spd (from 1983), Chrysler TorqueFlite auto (from 1982) | 100" only |
| Mid (EFI and VM diesel) | 1986 to 1994 | 3.5 Rover V8 EFI, 3.9 Rover V8 EFI (from 1989) | 2.4 VM (1986-1989), 2.5 VM (1989-1992), 200Tdi (1992-1994) | LT77 5-spd manual, LT230 transfer box, ZF 4HP22 auto (from 1985) | 100" standard, 108" LSE from 1992 |
| Late ("Classic" name era) | 1994 to 1996 | 3.9 Rover V8 EFI, 4.2 Rover V8 EFI (LSE) | 300Tdi | R380 5-spd manual, LT230 transfer box, ZF 4HP22 auto | 100" and 108" LSE |
Petrol-specific parts including carburettor components, Lucas 14CUX injection parts, and V8 cooling system components are sub-era-sensitive. A 3.5 carburettor-era part will not fit a 3.9 EFI vehicle. On the diesel side, the VM, 200Tdi, and 300Tdi engine families share the chassis but differ substantially in ancillaries, cooling, and fuel system parts. Confirm your engine code from the engine identification plate before ordering diesel-specific components.
Engine, gearbox, and production-year data for this generation is documented in the Haynes Range Rover Classic Service and Repair Manual by Methuen and Coomber (1997), which remains the primary independent workshop reference for the Range Rover Classic.
Two identification systems apply across the Classic's production run, and which one you have depends on your build year.
Pre-1980 Classics use a Land Rover-format chassis number rather than the modern 17-digit VIN. The chassis number on these vehicles is stamped on the right-hand front chassis rail and on a small plate riveted to the engine bay bulkhead. It typically begins with the model and body code, followed by a sequential serial number.
From 1980 onwards the Classic carries a 17-digit ISO VIN, mounted on a plate on the driver's-side bulkhead in the engine bay and on a second plate visible through the windscreen at the top of the dashboard. The 10th character encodes the model year.
Before ordering, confirm the following for your Classic:
If you are unsure of your specification, send your chassis number or VIN to the Budget Parts team and we will confirm fitment before you order.
Parts CategoriesThe Classic collection covers all major component groups for the 1970-1996 production run, including engine components (Rover V8 cylinder heads, gaskets, manifolds, Lucas 14CUX EFI parts, VM and Tdi diesel ancillaries), cooling system parts, braking components, transmission parts (LT77, R380, ZF 4HP22 service items), drivetrain components (LT230 transfer box parts, propshafts, CV joints), electrical components (lamps, switches, sensors, looms), body panels, chassis sections, and trim parts. Restoration-grade parts including correct period fittings, fasteners, and trim are stocked alongside service-grade replacements.
The Range Rover Classic used coil spring suspension throughout the majority of its production life. Electronic air suspension (EAS) was introduced from late 1992 for high-specification 1993 model year vehicles and was standard on the 108-inch LSE long-wheelbase variant. Air suspension parts — compressors, valve blocks, air springs, height sensors — apply only to these later vehicles. Earlier Classics use conventional coil springs and do not use EAS components.
The presence of an air compressor in the engine bay and ride-height sensors at each corner are the primary visual identifiers for EAS fitment. Confirm before ordering suspension-specific parts.
The Range Rover Classic body uses aluminium outer panels on a steel inner frame. The steel structural elements — sills, floor sections, bulkhead areas, and chassis rails — are susceptible to corrosion, particularly on vehicles that have spent years in northern European conditions or on salted roads. Preventative treatment with cavity wax and underseal extends chassis and body life substantially and is a near-universal step in any Classic restoration. Suitable products are listed in the Dinitrol rust protection for Land Rover range.
Quality TiersClassic listings show a quality grade on every line: Genuine (Land Rover-channel stock with original part number and packaging, ideal for concours-grade restoration), OEM (the same component from the original supplier without the official-channel markup, the standard choice for mechanical refresh and workshop use), or Aftermarket (independently manufactured equivalent, suitable for older vehicles where Genuine stock is unavailable or for non-critical service items). The Range Rover parts collection carries the full tier definitions.
EU Stock and DispatchClassic inventory is held at the Budget Parts warehouse in The Hague and dispatched across all EU member states, with EU-correct VAT treatment for European customers and direct shipping to most non-EU European destinations including Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.

Technical GuidesThe following guides cover mechanical systems shared by the Range Rover Classic. They are published on the Budget Parts blog and provide diagnostic and replacement context relevant to Classic owners and restoration workshops.
Clutch fault diagnosis across manual-gearbox Land Rover models, relevant to Classic owners running the LT77 five-speed (from 1983), the earlier LT95 four-speed, or the late R380 five-speed (from 1994). Covers bite point assessment, hydraulic circuit checks, and component identification before replacement.
Range Rover Classic clutch diagnosis →Structured approach to diagnosing crank-no-start conditions across Land Rover fuel system types. Covers the Rover V8 in carburettor form (to 1986), Lucas 14CUX EFI form (1986 to 1996), and Tdi diesel in 200 and 300 variants (1992 to 1996) as fitted to the Range Rover Classic.
Range Rover Classic fuel system diagnosis →The classic Defender shares the Rover V8, 200Tdi, 300Tdi, LT77, R380, and LT230 transfer box with the Range Rover Classic. Drivetrain service items, transmission seals, and transfer box parts often cross-fit between the two; confirm by part number before ordering.
Classic Defender parts collection →This collection covers the Range Rover Classic, the first-generation Range Rover produced from 1970 to 1996. It includes all petrol variants (3.5, 3.9, and 4.2 litre Rover V8) and all diesel variants (2.4 and 2.5 litre VM Motori, 200Tdi, and 300Tdi), as well as both standard-wheelbase 100-inch and long-wheelbase 108-inch LSE / County LWB configurations. It does not cover the Range Rover P38, which began production in 1994 as a separate model on a different platform and has its own collection.
A Range Rover built in 1995 is most likely a Range Rover Classic. Land Rover applied the "Classic" name from 1994 when the second-generation P38 launched alongside the original model, and continued Classic production through 1996 for certain configurations alongside early P38 production. The two are entirely separate models on different platforms with different engines and electronics; parts are not interchangeable. The clearest distinguishing features are the body style (Classic has the original square-edged 1970s shape; P38 has the rounded 1994-era styling) and the chassis number or VIN plate on the engine bay bulkhead. If you are unsure, send your chassis number or VIN to the Budget Parts team and we will confirm.
The Range Rover Classic used several distinct engine families across its production life. The Rover V8 ran from 1970 to 1996 in 3.5, 3.9, and 4.2 litre forms, with carburettors until 1986 and Lucas 14CUX electronic fuel injection from 1986 onwards. Diesel options included the VM Motori 2.4 (1986-1989), VM Motori 2.5 (1989-1992), 200Tdi (1992-1994), and 300Tdi (from late 1994). Many engine parts including manifolds, cooling components, fuel system parts, and EFI sensors are not interchangeable across these variants. Confirm your engine code from the engine identification plate before ordering. Contact us with your chassis number or VIN if you are unsure.
Air suspension parts are stocked in this collection but apply only to vehicles where air suspension was fitted from the factory. Electronic air suspension (EAS) was introduced on the Range Rover Classic from late 1992 for high-specification 1993 model year vehicles and was standard on the 108-inch LSE / County LWB variant. Earlier Classic models used conventional coil spring suspension and do not accept EAS components. If you are unsure whether your vehicle has air suspension, look for an air compressor mounted in the engine bay and ride-height sensors at each corner.
Most full Classic restorations follow a similar sequence regardless of donor vehicle condition: chassis and bulkhead structural assessment first (these determine whether a restoration is economically viable), then body panel and aluminium-skin condition, then drivetrain and engine refresh, and finally electrical, trim, and detail items. Budget Parts stocks parts across all four categories, including period-correct fittings for concours-grade work and OEM-spec components for mechanical refresh. For chassis preservation, the Dinitrol rust protection range is the standard EU choice. For drivetrain rebuilds, the LT77, R380, and LT230 service kits are stocked alongside Rover V8 and Tdi engine components. Workshops running multiple Classic restorations can register for trade-account pricing and kit-build support through the wholesale portal.
It depends on the build year. Range Rover Classics built before 1980 carry a Land Rover-format chassis number rather than the modern 17-digit VIN. The chassis number on these earlier vehicles is stamped on the right-hand front chassis rail and on a small plate riveted to the engine bay bulkhead. From 1980 onwards, the Classic carries a 17-digit ISO VIN displayed on a plate on the driver's-side bulkhead in the engine bay and on a secondary plate visible through the windscreen at the top of the dashboard; the 10th character of the VIN encodes the model year. Both formats are valid for fitment confirmation — send whichever applies to your vehicle to the Budget Parts team if you need help identifying the correct part.
