Valve Stem Seal, Exhaust - cylinder head valve train of the 2.0L 16-valve TiVCT turbocharged petrol engine.
Fits over the exhaust valve stem at the top of the valve guide, beneath the valve spring. It meters the oil film that lubricates the stem inside the guide and stops surplus oil being drawn down the guide into the exhaust port. The seal works against high port temperatures and hardens with age and heat cycling.
Hardened, split or displaced seals let oil pass into the combustion chamber, giving blue smoke on start-up and after a period of overrun, oil-fouled plugs and carbon build-up on the valve. Seals are renewed as a full set whenever the cylinder head or the valve springs are disturbed, since they age at the same rate.
