Inlet valve stem seal for the cylinder head valve train.
The seal is pressed onto the inlet valve guide boss and wipes the valve stem as it reciprocates, metering the small quantity of oil needed to lubricate the guide while preventing crankcase oil being drawn down the stem into the inlet port. Once the sealing lip hardens or splits, oil passes the guide and shows as blue exhaust smoke on start-up and after overrun, together with carbon build-up on the valve head and seat.
Applies to the 2.0L 16V TiVCT turbocharged petrol engine. Inlet side only - the exhaust valve stem seal is a separate part. Stem seals are renewed as a complete set whenever the cylinder head is dismantled.
