Drive Shaft Boot Kit - Outer Constant Velocity Joint - Front, part of the front axle drive shaft assembly.

The boot seals the outer constant velocity joint of the front drive shaft, retaining the joint grease and keeping water, dirt and road debris out of the joint.

A split or perished boot allows grease to be thrown out and contamination to enter, leading to rapid wear of the joint, knocking or clicking on lock and eventual joint failure. Inspect the boot at each service and renew it as soon as splitting or grease leakage is evident - replacing a boot early is far cheaper than replacing the drive shaft.

What does the outer CV boot do on the front drive shaft?
The outer CV boot seals the outer constant velocity joint on the front drive shaft, holding the joint grease in and keeping water, grit and salt out. It's the rubber concertina at the wheel end of the shaft on the Discovery Sport and Evoque. Once it splits, the joint runs dry and wears fast.
How many boot kits are needed for a front CV job?
One kit covers one outer CV joint, so one side of the vehicle. Both front boots perished means two kits. The inner joints use a different boot, so this one won't cover them. Most people replacing one side inspect the other at the same time, since they typically age together.
What are the signs the outer CV boot has failed?
Grease flung around the inside of the wheel arch is the classic sign, along with a split or cracked boot when you inspect it. Clicking on full lock means the joint has already taken damage. On the Discovery Sport and Evoque, catching a split boot early usually saves the whole drive shaft.
Can I replace just the boot, or do I need a new drive shaft?
You can replace just the boot if the joint is still sound, meaning no clicking, no play and clean grease inside. That's exactly what this kit is for. If the joint clicks on lock or feels notchy, a new boot won't fix it and the shaft or joint itself needs replacing.
