Drive Chain Idler - timing gear idler sprocket for the 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium engine family (AJ200 / AJ20 series, petrol and diesel).

The idler sprocket turns on a fixed shaft inside the timing drive and carries the chain between the crankshaft and the driven sprockets, setting the chain path and maintaining wrap on the drive sprockets. Together with the chain guides and the hydraulic tensioner it controls chain whip and keeps valve timing stable across the engine speed range.

Wear in the sprocket or its bearing typically shows as timing chain rattle, most obviously on a cold start before oil pressure reaches the tensioner. The idler is normally renewed as part of a full timing chain overhaul, alongside the chain, guides and tensioner.
