Ball Stud - Tailgate Strut - the ball pivot that a tailgate (luggage compartment door) gas strut socket clips onto.

It threads into the body aperture or the tailgate panel and forms one of the two pivot points carrying the strut, allowing the strut to swivel as the tailgate is opened and closed.

A corroded or worn stud lets the strut socket detach under load, so the stud is commonly renewed at the same time as the gas strut itself.
